Private prisons claim they could house prisoners for less and ease the overcrowding of the prison system. It is always easier to fight against a people who cannot fight back very hard. Mandatory minimum sentencing, three strikes law and the “War on Drugs” were passed in the name of safety. “We are going to make our streets safer” we were told. “We’re taking dangerous criminals off the street, we’re getting rid of the drug lords, we’re getting drugs off of our streets ” was the rallying cry. None of which actually happened.

The actual facts are that as these laws were passed, law enforcement agencies targeted and continue to target minority and poor communities. Even though there is solid evidence there are more white drug users than black and minority drug users.
